Gemini Meets Android XR: The Future of AI on Glasses and Headsets
Discover how Google's Gemini AI is set to transform the Android XR ecosystem, bringing smarter, more immersive experiences to AR glasses and VR headsets.
Gemini Meets Android XR: The Future of AI on Glasses and Headsets

Last week, Google highlighted how Gemini and Android are working together across phones, watches, TVs, and in-car displays to enhance productivity and user experience. Now, attention is shifting to the next frontier: enabling Gemini to assist users from their own perspective—hands-free and seamlessly integrated into their surroundings.
This vision is fueling the latest innovation in Android XR, the first Android platform developed in the Gemini era. Designed to power a diverse ecosystem of devices, including headsets and smart glasses, Android XR brings a new level of contextual, immersive assistance.
With Gemini embedded in these devices, users can engage with an AI assistant that sees and hears what they do, providing proactive help based on real-world input. Whether navigating virtual environments or staying connected in the real world, users can rely on hands-free support that enhances presence and engagement.
When Android XR was unveiled in partnership with Samsung and Qualcomm, Google also introduced Samsung’s upcoming Project Moohan headset, which promises an infinite-screen immersive experience. Gemini enhances the usability and intelligence of Android XR headsets by interpreting visual context and initiating actions on behalf of the user.
Smart Glasses Enter a New Era
At Google I/O, the company offered a deeper look at the capabilities of Android XR-powered smart glasses. Building on over a decade of research into wearable tech, these glasses represent a significant leap forward.
Equipped with cameras, microphones, and speakers, the glasses pair with smartphones to provide access to apps and services—without ever needing to pull out a device. Some models also feature an in-lens display that privately shows timely and helpful information.
By integrating Gemini, these glasses offer personalised, contextual assistance. They can remember important information, understand user context, and provide real-time support throughout the day.
The live demo showcased scenarios such as messaging, calendar management, navigation, photography, and even real-time language translation, offering subtitles for in-person conversations—a major step toward breaking language barriers.
Making Wearable AI Stylish and Accessible
Google is collaborating with leading fashion-forward eyewear brands, including Gentle Monster and Warby Parker, to ensure these smart glasses are both functional and stylish—designed for all-day wear. Future collaborations with brands like Kering Eyewear aim to broaden the selection of wearable tech available to consumers.
In addition, the partnership with Samsung is being expanded to develop a comprehensive software and reference hardware platform for Android XR-powered glasses. Developers will gain access to build on this platform later this year, fostering innovation within the ecosystem.
To ensure the technology is respectful of user privacy and the environment, Google is currently testing prototypes with trusted users and incorporating their feedback. More updates on availability and progress are expected in the coming months.
